An Investigative Experiment as a Source of Information on the Length of Visibility at the Moment of a Traffic Accident
In 2022, in the Republic of Croatia, a total of 31.7% of traffic accidents occurred at dusk, night, or dawn. At the same time, 51.60% of traffic accidents resulted in fatalities.
In the subsequent proceedings before the competent courts, a temporal and spatial analysis of the dynamics of the traffic accident is carried out based on accident scene documentation, which should provide an answer to the question at which moment and at what distance the driver could notice the danger and whether there were technical possibilities to avoid it at that moment. In the analysis, the length of visibility is typically determined using the results of various experimental studies.
In cases of traffic accidents that occur at night or in conditions of reduced visibility, the length of visibility on the roadway can be checked by performing an investigative experiment during the traffic accident scene investigation or immediately after its completion.
The goal of the investigative experiment is to verify specific facts, which requires good preparation and a clear understanding of its purpose and method of implementation so that the results can later be used in analyzing the dynamics of traffic accidents.
