From the repertoire of the Pučki pivači Gospe od Otoka – Solin: Eight reinterpreted songs

Sažetak
This paper investigates and analyses eight songs (Podno Klisa; Planula zora; Na srid grada
Šibenika; Zeleni se gaj; Tri male divojčice; Volilo se dvoje mladi'; Mila moja, napoj meni konja;
Svi Cigani Sveca slave) that the singers group Pučki pivači Gospe od Otoka from Solin have
known and performed for many years, having learned and (re)interpreted them at the time
between the two World Wars. Alongside their original repertoire of traditional church and
secular songs, for which they are best known and recognized, the Pučki pivači have adopted
a collection of songs of both known and unknown authorships, some of the titles, however,
originating from other regions. In practice, as well as in personal consciousness, the singers
have gradually adapted and reshaped them into something of «their own» and, therefore,
distinctly of Solin. A comparison with the musical characteristics of some of the original
songs available to us reveals the modifications and adaptations that previous generations
of Pučki pivači applied in their performances and that have been preserved up to the present day. Through long-term repetition and performance consolidation of these song variants - mostly three-part - distinctive stylistic and performance traits have been achieved, which also characterize Solin’s traditional songs, especially those of secular, (proto)klapa origin. The songs studied are presented here for the first time with transcriptions, alongside their performance, historical, and social contexts. Building partly on previous knowledge, this article, primarily as the result of field research, aims to give public visibility to the selected segment of the Pučki pivači repertoire and offer new interpretations. Moreover, it seeks to provide both the bearers of the songs and the local, wider, and academic communities with insights into various components (especially graphical) of the specific part of the Solin’s musical heritage, thereby contributing to its better preservation.
