Sažetak

Recent research highlights the potential of dexmedetomidine, an α2-adrenoreceptor agonist, as a preventive treatment for postpartum depression (PPD). Originally studied in anesthetic settings, dexmedetomidine has shown antidepressant effects, reducing agitation and depressive symptoms. It is sedative, anxiolytic, and analgesic, targeting α2-adrenoreceptors implicated in depression. Studies link increased α2-adrenoreceptor activity and reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels to PPD. Dexmedetomidine appears to modulate these pathways, promoting neuroplasticity and mood regulation.
