Sažetak

The paper deals with intercultural competencies and the importance of having them among individuals in contemporary multicultural societies. Also, in the context of interculturalism, the work explores the need for the education of librarians in acquiring the intercultural competencies that are necessary for working with users in culturally diverse societies such as the one in Croatia. For the purpose of the aforementioned, the paper provides a brief overview of the basic terms and approaches necessary for defining and understanding intercultural competencies on which the concept of interculturalism is based, i. e., the cultural model of interculturality, if it is, the preferred model for regulating intercultural relationships in a multicultural society. The education of librarians and public cultural workers for the acquisition of intercultural competences is imposed as an imperative in multicultural societies as supported by the data of a 2016 survey conducted on Croatian librarians.
