Abstract

This paper analyzes some forty copper-alloy vessels and vessel fragments from the Roman Period Collection of the Archaeological Museum of Istria. Most of them are unpublished and the sites and circumstances of their discovery are not known. Jugs and kettles account for a majority of these finds; some of them are completely preserved and have already been published. Ladles, pateras and casseroles are each represented with several specimens. There are also two goblet handles, one krater and one basin. A number of completely preserved kettles and jugs come from the hoard found in Šijana near Pula. These artifacts are mostly dated to the period between 1st century BC and 3rd century AD – but primarily between 1st and 2nd centuries. Figural decorations – mostly Dionysian and apotropaic motifs – are mainly found on jug handles. The handles on the sacrificial pateras are shaped as animal protomas.
