Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore the role of anonymity in shaping self-presentation and user behaviour on social media, as well as the impact of these factors on digital identities and online interactions. The research was conducted through a review of recent academic studies, using the Web of Science database and the application of the PRISMA methodology for literature analysis and synthesis. The review includes studies published between 2021 and 2024. The findings highlight the significant role of anonymity in reducing user inhibitions and increasing freedom of expression, while also emphasising challenges such as trust-building, data security, and user accountability. Differences between anonymous and non-anonymous platforms were analysed: while anonymous platforms encourage honesty and experimentation with identities, non-anonymous platforms often lead to strategies of conforming to social norms and creating idealised self-images. Psychological and sociological implications include impacts on mental health, perceptions of privacy, and the dynamics of social relationships, whereas technological implications pertain to platform design and algorithmic structures shaping user behaviour. It is concluded that anonymity is a complex phenomenon that provides a space for creativity and expression but simultaneously requires responsible use and thoughtful management strategies to minimise negative consequences and ensure safe digital communities.
