Sažetak

Road traffic is the backbone of mobility and, therefore, a key element in the development of modern society. However, it also carries significant risks of human tragedies. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of mortality among young people, with children being particularly vulnerable. Studies indicate that intersections, and pedestrian crossings, especially those near schools and parks, are hazardous locations for children moving independently in traffic. This emphasises the need to identify and classify dangerous areas.
This paper starts with the exposure concept and proposes a new index and a more comprehensive way of measuring exposure. The index covers exposure on the road network, which is determined by the number of lanes, road surface, traffic direction, accident fatality, and betweenes centrality of road segments. It also measures exposure on the pedestrian network, where exposure is determined by detachment from the road network, illumination, and sidewalk parking. Additionally, it measures exposure due to the technical features of pedestrian crossings based on indicators from the Traffic Signs, Signals, and Road Equipment Regulations, as well as exposure based on routes and the number of children using them.
The index is measured using Z-scores, and after analysis, an overview of how the exposure index fits into the theoretical framework is provided, along with a review of its integration and enhancement within existing exposure measurements. Finally, recommendations are given for reducing exposure and improving children's safety in traffic, taking into account the location of the study.
