The most common errors in horse deworming

Abstract
Equine parasitology is an area of veterinary medicine that has undergone significant change in the last ten years. Thanks to new scientific findings, it has become possible to gain a better insight into the life of parasites and to understand their impact on equine health. Conventional deworming programs, which are now out-dated, are increasingly being discarded and the focus is shifting to parasitological coprological examination. The decision on the need for deworming is made on the basis of the results of this examination. The most common mistakes include deworming without parasitological coprological examination, underdosing of anthelmintics, the lack of quarantine and parasitological coprological examinations of newly arrived horses, the lack of implementation of hygiene measures in the pasture, and the belief that the horse must be completely free of parasites. The education of veterinarians and horse owners in this area is necessary to
ensure the health of horses, especially the younger age groups.
