The language of the first printed book by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić: Valjani i nevaljani. Pripoviedke, priče i pjesmice za dječake [Good and Bad, Short Stories, Stories and Rhymes for Boys]

Abstract
The paper discusses the current knowledge about the language of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić’s
literary works, especially about the unjustified adaptations and numerous changes that her
language went through from edition to edition.
The plural case system is described in her first printed booklet in 1901: Valjani i nevaljani.
Pripoviedke, priče i pjesmice za dječake [Good and Bad. Short Stories, Stories and Rhymes
for Boys]. The case forms she uses are put in the context of the literary and linguistic stylization
of the Zagreb Philological School and, in general, of the Croatian standard language
at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century, and, where necessary for the interpretation of
individual forms, data from her other works are also presented.
Part of the paper is also devoted to the present and past participles in the role of adjectives,
which are a permanent feature of the literary and linguistic stylization of the Zagreb
Philological School as well as the language of I. Brlić-Mažuranić
