Peculiarities of word formation in the works by Tonči Petrasov Marović
Sažetak
rović that are very rarely used in the Croatian literary language, as well as those that are
considered obsolete, regionalisms or for some other reason stylistically marked, as well as
the words that Marović himself created. The analysis includes nouns, adjectives and verbs
formed by pure suffixal formation, pure prefixal formation and prefixal-suffixal formation,
examples of imperfective verb formation, and nouns and adjectives formed by pure compound
formation and compound-suffixal formation. Examples from most of Marović’s works
are included, starting from the first published book Asfaltirano nebo (1958) to literary works
written at the end of the 1980s. It is concluded that in the poems written in the 1950s and
1960s, Marović is extremely prone to stylistically marked words created by using the potential
of “empty spaces” in the system of word formation in the Croatian standard language. He
mainly uses existing formation patterns, but with combinations of formation elements that
are theoretically possible, but unconfirmed or very rarely confirmed in practice. Marović
conceived and created new words while he had strength to do so. They are absent from the
works collected in the book Job in the Hospital. He wrote them while already seriously ill,
before his death. The book was published posthumously in 1992.
