Abstract
This paper on Matko Peić’s 'Skitnje' analyses value judgements of the phenomena he describes in his travel memoir from the perspective of axiological (ethno)linguistics. Peić’s literary statements are used to partially reconstruct segments of the linguistic picture of the world captured and stored in Peić’s language. This kind of analysis also allows us to examine certain stereotypes reflected in Peić’s 'Skitnje'. The analysis identifies various types of direct or indirect expression of value judgements (content of morphemes or words, use of the words 'good-bad', the content of other words accompanying descriptions of phenomena, combinations of expressions with accompanying words and suffixal morphemes, combinations of words that imply certain connotations in a given context). It is also noted that accompanying words are occasionally used to relativise prototypical meanings of words describing phenomena.
