Sažetak
One year after the publication of the first two volumes of Frane Petrić’s (Francesco Patrizi da Cherso) Poetics (Ferrara, 1586), entitled Deca istoriale and Deca disputata, Iacopo Mazzoni published the first part of his voluminous work entitled Della difesa della Comedia di Dante. Distinta in sette libri (On the Defense of Dante’s Comedy. Divided into seven books) (Cesena, 1587). Here, in the twentieth chapter of the third book, Mazzoni makes some critical observations about what Petrić wrote in the Deca istoriale regarding Sositheus, a Greek tragic poet of the Pleiad (3rd century BC), thus entering into controversy with the philosopher from Cherso. Today, this controversy – which was well known in 1587 – is known only marginally and more for its protagonists than for the subject matter. It consists of a total of four writings: 1. Risposta di Francesco Patrizi; a due opposizioni fattegli dal Sig. Giacopo Mazzo¬ni (Response by Francesco Patrizi; to two objections made to him by Sig. Giacopo Mazzoni) (Ferrara, 1587); 2. Discorso di Iacopo Mazzoni intorno alla risposta, et alle oppositioni fattegli dal Sig. Francesco Patricio, pertenente alla Storia del Poema Dafni, o Litiersa di Sositeo, poeta della Pleiade (Discourse by Iacopo Mazzoni con¬cerning the response, and the oppositions made to him by Sig. Francesco Patricio, pertaining to the History of the Poem Daphnis, or Lityerses by Sositheus, poet of the Pleiad) (Cesena, 1587); 3. Difesa di Francesco Patrizi; dalle cento accuse dategli dal Signor Iacopo Mazzoni (Defense of Francesco Patrizi; from the hundred accusations given to him by Signor Iacopo Mazzoni) (Ferrara, 1587); 4. Ragioni delle cose dette, e d’alcune autorità citate da Iacopo Mazzoni nel Discorso della Storia del poema Dafni, o Litiersa di Sositeo (Reasons for the things said, and some authorities cited by Iacopo Mazzoni in the Discourse on the History of the poem Daphnis, or Lityerses by Sositheus) (Cesena, 1587). Some compilers of Petrić’s bibliography have erroneo¬usly attributed the last writing of the controversy (Ragioni) to Petrić. Even though, as Mazzoni himself writes, the object of his controversy with Petrić is meaningless, the controversy itself provides a useful insight into the method of polemical analysis, reasoning, and opposition within which both show a tendency to present themselves as acute thinkers. Furthermore, the controversy between Petrić and Mazzoni offers a valuable picture of the reactions of contemporaries to the publication of the first part – the “historical” one – of Petrić’s Poetics.
