Sažetak
Euthanasia of dogs and cats is a routine procedure in veterinary practice, and the veterinarians, depending on
their knowledge and experience, as well on the condition of the animal, choose the method and means of euthanasia.
The aim of this research was to review and analyze statistically archival data of dogs and cats euthanized at the Clinic for Internal Medicine and the Clinic for Surgery, Orthopedics, and Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb in 2022, in order to identify the incidence and reasons for euthanasia. The analysis included age, sex, breed, reasons for euthanasia, drugs used during euthanasia and their method of administration, duration of treatment, diagnostics performed prior to euthanasia, and the method of carcass disposal. The incidence of euthanasia in the entire studied population was 4.7 %. Euthanasia of cats was more common than euthanasia of dogs. The majority of the euthanized patients were euthanized on the day of admission. The drugs most commonly used were thiopental and T-61, administered intravenously. The most frequent causes of euthanasia were neoplasms and trauma. The majority of pet owners opted for the collective disposal of the carcass.
