Abstract

In the immediate hinterland of the town centre of Crikvenica, past the valley of the Dubračina stream, in a secluded location between the settlements of Kotor and Podbadanj can be found the Godač site. Here during July 2007 extensive field visits and trial sounding excavations were carried out. The remnants of a once used settlement were detected, and a monitoring station perfectly dug into the natural configuration of the landscape. From the position of Godač the Dubračina estuary into the sea can be seen, as well as a Roman period colony with its grand ceramic workshops, the flow of the Dubračina and the fortress on Badanj. The dispersion of scattered archaeological evidence shows the intensive use of this position during the Late Antique and Early Byzantine periods, but with no traces of masonry constructions. The Late Antique-Early Byzantine fortress or surveillance tower, of which only humble traces of its foundation remain, is located on the top of nearby Kotor hill, near the medieval chapel of Sv. Juraj (St. George). During this mentioned period, but during the later centuries, the stone burial mounds on Godač were damaged or deshaped, so their existence can only be witnessed by the fragments of bronze jewellery and pieces of Early Bronze Age pottery. The location is situated on the route of the Križišće-Žuta Lokva highway, and so before construction work is carried out further archaeological research needs to be carried out.
