VRTARE MALE CAVE IN DRAMALJ
Kazimir Miculinić
Sažetak
The Vrtare Male Cave in Dramalj began to be systematically researched at the end of the 20th century, and since 2005 the research has been led by the Croatian Bio-Speleological Society. Paleontological excavations were conducted by the Institute for Quaternary Palaeontology and Geology of the Croatian Academy of Sciences, later by the Croatian Natural History Museum from Zagreb. The bio-speleological and paleontological findings surpassed all expectations and became a real scientific sensation. The most valuable findings were the possible new species for science: pseudoscorpion Chthonius sp., scarab beetle Bryaxis sp., planktonic crabs and calanoida copepods Stygocyclopia sp. and Metacalanus sp. In the sedimentary layers there have been found many fossil remains of Pleistocene animals: elephants (Elephantinae), Merck's rhinoceros (Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis), fallow dear (Dama dama), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), Eurasian cave lion (Panthera spelaea), cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) and many other species of mammals and large numbers of birds. The excavated findings are stored in the Crikvenica City Museum.
