Abstract

Viticulture and agriculture from ancient times has been the foundation of the economy in Vinodol, as revealed in the title of this region, which from antiquity was called Vallis vinaria Vinodol. Alongside the wine and agricultural aspects the people from Vinodol were also skilled bricklayers, stonecutters and masons, and as such went into the world to make their fortunes. At home the women stayed with the elders and children, and so often the burdens of life fell on the backs of the women, who had the business of maintaining the family household, caring for everything in the family. The author, using the Grižane chakavian dialect, outlines the various forms of business in this area, carefully describing the work around the vineyards, the drudgery, spraying and harvest ing of the grapes and cellar work and production of great wine, especially the indigenous 'žlahtina'. Apart from work in the vineyards also of importance was the work on the ground (digging), for which people mutually helped each other, after which came the sowing and harvesting and cutting of grass for the grow ing of crops, of which there used to be enough. The point is to see how life was like here once, how it is today and how it has changed, what are the greatest reasons for new methods of living and earning a living.
