Abstract

If we view Vinodol from a nearby place we get a unique association that can be expressed in a few words: sea – past – present – future. This association makes the identity collage of Vinodol: its image, personal card and portrait. In a more detailed analysis this group of characteristics can be divided into: a) sea, b) valley, c) man; and it can be viewed in a historic context from ancient times (early stone age) which will in the past one hundred years be joined by the word – tourism. Just as the association is unique so is Vinodol, a unique community of inorganic and organic nature, nature and man in a period of a few thousand years. Within this entity there are a number of smaller localities, local identities (Grižane, Klenovica, Novi Vinodol, Crikvenica...). Some elements of this entirety and its smaller parts are gradually disappearing and changing and new ones are emerging, but the key characteristics that are relatively permanent are in the process of constant modification. Even though man was one of the creators of these characteristics he has made quite a few mistakes that are negatively affecting the image of the area. This occurred mostly in the 20th century by overexploiting the natural areas, unecological behaviour, urbanisation and the escalation of tourism. Consequently, Vinodol has its own identity but it is changing: some parts are dieing out and disappearing, some are changing and improving, and some parts are new. It is constantly developing so there are concerns that not enough responsibility and care is taken to preserve what is of most value in it; its natural and historic rosary with beautiful flowers that we inherited from our ancestors and nature.
