THE RESTORATION OF THE PAINTING OUR LADY WITH THE CHILD
Sanja Škrgatić
Abstract
The painting of Our Lady with the Child is positioned on the main altar of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Crikvenica. It hasn’t been established how and when the painting arrived in Crikvenica. Its attribution hasn’t been precisely defined even after research. It is still believed to be from a wide circle around the Venetian artist Paolo Veneziana (Paolo’s brother Lorenzo Veneziana, Zadar artist Nilola Ciprijanov de Blondis, Catarino di Marco da Venezia). It was included in the catalogue for the exhibition of Paolo Veneziano’s work at the Klović Court in Zagreb and in 2004 it was sent to the Croatian Restoration Institution for restoration. This was when four chronological layers were found on the painting, an original Gothic and three copies: a baroque one, one from 1912 and one from 1980 for which we can assume damaged the original gothic painting the most. It has been estimated that the percentage of preservation of the original layer is 30%. This is the reason it was decided to restore the baroque layer (2nd chronological layer) of the painting that makes up a whole with the baroque pavlinian ratables of Paulus Riedl. The original gothic layer is present only in one discreet probe in the fabric under the Madonna’s knees.
