Sažetak
At the maternity ward of the General Hospital Virovitica, there were 58713 births from 1965 to 2023, with an average of 995 per year. The highest number of births was in 1984 (1501), followed by a significant and continuous decline, reaching just over 500 per year today. There has been a significant increase in the number of cesarean sections, with their frequency ranging between 20-30% over the past 20 years. Perinatal mortality, despite large annual fluctuations, shows a continuous decrease, more pronounced in the last twenty years (5‰). In the investigated period, the perinatal mortality was slightly above the national average. Early neonatal mortality has shown a constant decline, especially in the last decade, while fetal mortality is still high and significantly affects the overall perinatal mortality. Long-term and comprehensive improvement of demographic measures should influence an increase in the number of births. Improvement of antenatal care, better regional organization of perinatal care, and education of perinatal workers would lead to a further reduction in perinatal mortality.
