Sažetak
Volunteering is the voluntary investment of personal time, effort, knowledge, and skills to provide services or activities for the benefit of another person or community. Volunteering in healthcare takes place among patients, healthcare professionals, and often in demanding emotional situations. Through their presence and conversation, volunteers provide emotional support to patients, their families, and caregivers. The article highlights the benefits of volunteering for mental and physical health, as well as for the spiritual growth of individuals in discovering the meaning of life. Examples of good practices are highlighted, along with answers to the question of why it is good to do good. Volunteers in palliative care, in addition to all the desirable characteristics of volunteers such as goodwill, dedication, responsibility, and communication skills, also need to have empathy, compassion, and attention towards palliative patients and their loved ones. Volunteers strengthen the sense of community and can have long-long-term positive effects on the overall well-being of the population.
