Abstract

Strawberry growing is today a very intensive agricultural production. The application of modern technology achieves very high and profitable yields; however, the large use of chemical products (mineral fertilizers and pesticides) is an increasing problem. Modern strawberry consumers are looking for quality fruits with low residue levels. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the long-term sustainability of the soil and environmental protection. Therefore, more and more strawberry growers are looking for additional options through the use of microbiological fertilizers in strawberry cultivation. There are several options in this segment: products based on mycorrhizal fungi, based on the fungus Trichoderma, biological nitrogen (N) fixers, and bacteria that dissolve insoluble forms of phosphorus in the soil. By properly applying these new technological possibilities, it is possible to achieve high-quality strawberry yields without chemical residues while preserving the soil and the environment.
