Analysis of water temperature increase trends along the Drava River in Croatia

Sažetak
The paper analyses the available series of characteristic (minimum, mean and maximum) annual water temperatures measured at seven gauging stations along the Drava River in Croatia. Official data from the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service from Zagreb were used for the 76-year period (1948 to 2023). When performing the systematic analysis, the main problem we faced was the fact that the series of measurements differed at different stations and that there were numerous interruptions in measurements that greatly varied from station to station along the river. Regardless of this limiting fact, however, it was still possible to draw reliable conclusions about the increase in water temperatures along the Drava River, especially in the past 17 years (2007-2023). An increasing trend was found in all analysed series (with the exception of the series of maximum annual water temperatures in the Drava River at the Belišće station). In the past 17 years (2007-2023), the average minimum annual temperatures along the Drava River have increased by 0.86 ºC in comparison with the average minimum annual temperatures in the 1969-1985 sub-period. For the same two mentioned sub-periods, an average increase of 1.81 ºC was calculated for the sub-series of mean annual water temperatures, whereas it equalled 2.06 ºC for the sub-series of maximum annual temperatures. It has been determined that all analysed characteristic water temperatures (with the exception of the sub-series of minimum annual temperatures in the 2007-2023 sub-period) increase downstream along the watercourse starting from the Varaždin station down to the Osijek station
