Sažetak
This paper aims to analyse the phenomenon of surveillance, tracking down, and capture of irregularized migrants in Croatian media discourse. Th e focus is on media representations and the problematization of positions and social relations related to irregularized migrants on the move and in transit through the national territory. The analysis demonstrates that the produced social relations of domination cannot be fully understood through conventional conceptualizations of power, as they do not take place in the “space of appearance” (Arendt) but rather in spaces of concealment and fl ight. However, exclusion from the legal order does not signify a return to pre-social relations. As our analysis reveals, these relations are shaped by “cynegetic power” (Chamayou), wherein irregularized migrants become the target of a predatory hunting technology. Th ese relations of domination, rooted in abyssal exclusion and insecurity, necessitates both hiding and fleeing on one side, and tracking and capturing on the other. Through the analysis of media articles from 2018 and 2019, we uncover the mechanisms through which media discourse constructs these predatory relations, the ways in which cynegetic power operates, and how hegemonic alliances are produced within the everyday fi eld practices of restoring national political space.
