Abstract

Ivka and Greta: On Two Portraits from the Holdings of the Ethnographic Museum Split From its very beginnings, the Ethnographic Museum Split collected artworks by trained artists alongside ethnographic objects, most of which were made by anonymous craftsmen. The practice of acquiring artworks that provided additional interpretations of ethnographic objects in the permanent display was especially prominent from the 1910s until the Second World War. This study focuses on a 1930s watercolor by Greta Turković from the Museum’s Art Collection and a 1937 photograph from the Museum’s photographic archive. Based on similarities in composition and the type of traditional costume depicted, the paper explores a possible connection between the two. The research also draws on available secondary materials from the Ethnographic Museum Split, which are reinterpreted and supplemented.
