Abstract

The planned renovation and reconstruction of Hotel Issa in Vis provided an opportunity to resume archaeological excavations of the eastern Issaean necropolis at Vlaška Njiva, following a hiatus of nearly four decades. Five trenches were excavated between 2022 and 2024, yielding a minimum of 56 burials, including both inhumation and cremation graves, as well as tomb structures, dating to the Late Hellenistic and Roman periods. Their spatial distribution provides new evidence regarding the extent and internal development of the necropolis, which appears to have encompassed a large portion of the slope bordering the eastern peri-urban zone of Issa. This paper presents the preliminary results, focusing on the features, typology, and architecture of the excavated graves. New insights are compared with previously known evidence and contextualised within a broader interpretative framework, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the cultural, social, and spatial dynamics that shaped the Issaean mortuary landscape.
