Sažetak
The paper analyzes the operational-strategic significance of the Sunja bridgehead in the Homeland War,
with an emphasis on its key role in the defense of the city of Sisak and preventing the penetration of
enemy forces towards Zagreb. Sunja, as the only unoccupied point on the right
bank of the Sava, was under constant pressure from the JNA and Serbian paramilitary formations. Through a
historical, geopolitical and military-operational overview, the author shows how the defense of Sunja
was of crucial importance for the strategic stability of Pounje and the entire Croatian defense
in that part of the battlefield. Special focus is placed on the development of the front, significant battles,
command structure and Operation Storm, in which the Sunja bridgehead was the starting
point for the liberation of Banovina. Using relevant literature, war documents
and military analyses, the paper contributes to a better understanding of the key defense points of the
Homeland War.
