Sažetak

During January 2003, because of ice and/or wind a major part of Croatia south of Rijeka, found itself without electric energy. The reason was the failure of some Croatian transmission
lines. In this paper only the most important failures are given, as well as the entire state of Lika distribution network, and the inland region south of Velebit.
In the second part of the paper weather conditions in the period from 7 to 15 January from Rijeka to Peruèa are presented in order to analyze meteorological reasons of damages on transmission network. The most dangerous among them was very strong to stormy and even hurricane-speed bora, together with rain that was freezing in contact with the soil. Freezing rain was extremely strong and long lasting in the Knin region.
