Sažetak

Unilateral hearing loss affects numerous aspects of a person’s life. The purpose of this review paper is to closely examine the issues connected to this type of hearing loss and emphasize the role of a speech-language therapist in the rehabilitation process. Unilateral hearing loss can occur in all stages of life, from early infancy to old age. For adults, it can lead to various socioemotional, neurological and communicational consequences and in children it also affects their speech-language and cognitive development. Sound localization and speech perception in noise are the most significant difficulties in everyday communication for people with unilateral hearing loss. Devices used in the rehabilitation of unilateral hearing loss are classic hearing aid, contralateral routing of signal system, bone conduction hearing device and cochlear implant. When selecting the most appropriate device, the individual needs of a client must be considered. It is essential to raise awareness of unilateral hearing loss in the field of speech-language therapy because of its negative effects on communication, language and speech abilities and on academic achievement. A speech-language therapist takes part in the rehabilitation process which includes auditory training and counselling. Although unilateral hearing loss is a complex phenomenon that has significant impact on the quality of life, not enough research on this subject has been conducted in Croatia.
