Violent Crimes: Individual Characteristics of Perpetrators and the Influence of Alcohol tempore criminis

Sažetak
Given the fact that today various forms of violence have become a part of our everyday life, this paper deals with certain characteristics of violent crime offenders and their alcoholism at the time of committing a violent crime. The results presented in this paper are part of the scientific research project entitled “Croatian Violence Monitor – A Study of the Phenomenology, Etiology, and Prosecution of Delinquent Violence, focusing on Protecting Particularly Vulnerable Groups of Victims”. Secondary data sources were used for the research sample, namely collected court cases of violent crimes committed on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. The objective of the paper was to obtain better insight into certain individual features of violent crime offenders regarding the type of committed violence, the legal qualification of the most serious crime for which the perpetrator was sentenced, the motive for committing the crime, marital status, level of education, employment, and gender. The specific objective of the paper was to establish the differences in analyzed features considering the offender’s alcoholism tempore criminis. From the point of view of practice, this paper provides certain feedback to experts from various professions who deal with the issue of violence. Because the analyzed data in its totality showed that slightly more than 1/3 of the perpetrators of violent offenses committed the crime under the influence of alcohol, the need for additional planning and educating the public about the harm and possible consequences that can occur as a result of alcohol consumption is highlighted again. On the other hand, the mentioned data can be important for planning and creating adequate treatment of perpetrators of violent crimes.
