Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study is to analyze the course of the disease, therapy, complications and outcomes in pregnant women with COVID-19 treated at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases “Dr. Fran Mihaljević” in Zagreb.
Methods: Observational retrospective analysis of medical records of 44 pregnant women with COVID-19 treated between 1 October 2020 and 23 March 2023 at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases “Dr. Fran Mihaljević.”
Results: Out of 44 pregnant women hospitalized with COVID-19, 37 (84%) were in the third trimester of pregnancy. Two thirds of pregnant women (N = 27, 61%) developed mild to moderate disease while a third (N= 17, 39%) had severe and critical forms of the disease. During hospitalization 11 women gave birth with a median gestational age of 34 weeks at delivery, of which eight (73%) deliveries were by cesarean section. Improvement after treatment was observed in 39 (89%) pregnant women, while 5 (11%) pregnant women died. None of the 44 pregnant women were vaccinated against COVID-19.
Conclusion: Our observational study confirmed that COVID-19 in unvaccinated pregnant women carries an increased risk of developing severe and critical disease and poor outcomes; increased maternal mortality and premature birth.
