Abstract

This paper examines a corpus of about forty items—primarily manuscripts and, to a lesser extent, printed books—that, judging by ownership marks, belonged to women in Dubrovnik between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, with one notable earlier example from the fourteenth century. The study identifies female owners and analyzes the items with regard to the forms of ownership inscriptions, the represented authors and texts, the period of production, the scribes of the manuscripts, and, where present, marks of multiple ownership. The appendix contains an arranged list of the manuscripts and printed editions consulted, together with the names of their female owners. The paper contributes to the study of the still little-explored role of women in the early modern world of the book.
