Abstract

Natural swimming pools represent an ecological alternative to conventional pools, using plants and microorganisms to purify water instead of chemicals. Natural swimming pools function through two main zones – a swimming zone and a regeneration zone, including a filtration system that connects them. The aim of the paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of natural swimming pools, their advantages, disadvantages and key aspects for their maintenance. The function and role of natural swimming pools, types and differences compared to conventional pools are analyzed. The method of construction of natural swimming pools, i.e. the construction phases, the materials used for construction, and their distribution worldwide and in Croatia are discussed. A comparison with conventional pools shows the advantages of natural pools in terms of environmental sustainability, but also their large space requirements and specific risks. Natural swimming pools go beyond their basic recreational function because they represent a significant element of sustainable spatial planning, aimed at protecting natural resources and preserving biodiversity. In addition to their ecological advantages, they also have educational value because they encourage the development of environmental awareness and promote a responsible attitude towards nature, thereby actively contributing to the construction of more resilient and sustainable communities.
