Personal names from Peteranec in the Podravina region and Blato on the island of Korčula in the 19th century (1831–1840 and 1881–1890): a contribution to comparative historical anthroponymy

Sažetak
Based on the baptismal registers of the Catholic parishes of Peteranec in the Podravina region and Blato on the island of Korčula, this article applies a statistical-structural approach to the frequency of first personal names. It compares two ten-year samples, 1831–1840 and 1881–1890, comprising 4,977 baptismal entries: 3,204 in Blato and 1,773 in Peteranec. In the earlier sample, the five most frequent names accounted for 65.2–65.4% of male and more than 80% of female baptisms. In the later sample, their share in Peteranec fell to 39.8% among males and 55.8% among females, whereas in Blato it remained high (62.2% and 78.1%, respectively). Peteranec therefore displays substantial diversification, while Blato shows an expansion of the rare-name periphery alongside a persistently concentrated leading core. Several Slavic names occur in the Blato samples, but a revivalist motivation can be inferred only in some cases; no unequivocally non-hagionymic revivalist names were identified in the Peteranec samples. The leading-name structures of the two parishes partially converged, especially among female names, whereas the full repertoires did not display general convergence. The conclusions are limited to two local case studies and two chronological cross-sections.
