SAME COMPOUND NOUN FORMATION IN BURGENLAND CROATIAN IDIOMS

Abstract

The paper addresses examples of pure compound word formations in Burgenland Croatian idioms, i.e. compounds whose form contains no prefixes or suffixes, but requires at least two bases, usually connected by vowels. These form pure compounds which mostly consist of two bases, very rarely more. Within pure compounds, the bases are most often connected with a vowel. The vowel –o- is most often used in pure construction. Just as common are pure compounds with the vowel –ø-, while compounds that feature –e- are less frequent. Compounds without a vowel are rare, and they can be considered blends. Very few compounds feature –a-. The same compounds with the vowel –u- are used only in standard Burgenland Croatian. All examples of that type were adopted from contemporary standard Croatian into standard Burgenland Croatian, in which they are motivated by word formation on a synchronic level. According to their structure and word formation templates, we recognize five types of pure compounds in standard Burgenland Croatian: compounds in which the first base is a noun, compounds in which the first base is an adjective, compounds in which the first base is a number, compounds in which the first base is a pronoun, and compounds in which the first base is an adverb. These types of pure compounds are again divided into different sub-types. Same compound word formation is a non-resulting word formation sub-method in Burgenland Croatian idioms.
