Abstract
The starting points of the article are some fundamental ideas and conclusions concerning Andreis’s presentation of the period of musical Classicism in the Povijest hrvatske glazbe (History of Croatian Music) and in the second edition of the English translation Music in Croatia, taken over from the author’s text "The History of Croatian Music in the Period of Classicism - A Hundred Years of Historiographical Researches, Ideas and Syntheses: From Franjo Ksaver Kuhač to Josip Andreis", published in 1993. The period of Classicism was not one of Andreis’s topics of special interest, so he himself did not undertake any archival investigations, but collected information from various music and related sources. For this reason, his survey of the period, divided into two chapters on the 18th and 19th centuries, was unbalanced, depending on the varied depths of previous research. So he focused mainly on some local "music heroes", although some of them, as discovered only later, had no influence on Croatian music. He presented some aspects of the music life (schooling, music theatre, church music) of Dubrovnik and, partly, of Zagreb, because the investigations had been done previously, but did not change the concept of the chapters for the second English edition printed in 1982, in spite of some new insights. In this article, Andreis’s attitude towards the sources, literature and bibliography, and periodization as well as the hierarchy of the chosen material has been analyzed. Starting from that point, the survey of the research on music culture in Croatia and on the activities of musicians of Croatian origin, undertaken after the appearance of his books and after his death in 1982, has been presented. Certain previous mistakes and misconceptions have been corrected in this more recent research. The new facts rather complete the picture, but still leave enough space for further investigations. With the growth of the source materials, and with the specialization of scholars, it seems that eventual future syntheses will be possible only if written by a team of specialists.
