Abstract

«Media, Culture and Civil Society» is a book edited by Zrinjka Peruško which tries to respond to questions concerning civil society, analyzing the connections of communication, media and cultural aspects with its activity. The book is the result of the research project «Media, Communications and Cultural Aspects of Civil Society», which was conducted at the Institute for International Relations, IMO, Zagreb from 2002 to 2006. Editor and the authors decided to deal with civil society due to its actuality, which is a necessary foundation for the development of democracy, especially in the countries of «Western Balkans», which participate in the process of stabilization and association to the European Union. Attention is primarily devoted to the role and development of civil society in Croatia, with attempts of providing answers to questions what civil society is and is there civil society in Croatia. This book has opened approaches to the analysis of civil society which are less frequent in Croatia. The book is structured in three parts or foci through which civil society is analyzed: communication, culture and civil society. Such a multiple approach and options of integration into different theoretical approaches to civil society reveal texts of the authors represented in the book. They, above all, deepening questions which are covered, give specific answers and open those approaches which were not so evident in Croatia. The book «Media, Culture and Civil Society», derived from scientific research, has resulted with theoretical and methodological well-established articles, and the actuality of handled theme represents a valuable professional contribution which has debated the role of civil society in the development of democracy, with a particular aspect of its contribution to the democratization of cultural and the media space in Croatia. This book has opened a series of questions related to civil society, who have a good impetus to future research and further development of this always actual topic that can not bypass the constant changes time brings. This is an interesting and necessary collection of texts, a welcome guide that future analysis of civil society will not be able to avoid.
