Sažetak

In the period 1755–1775, that is, after the publication of Zanchi’s university textbook entitled Physica particularis (1748), de Dominis’s contribution to the explanation of rainbow was mentioned and evaluated in the works of four university professors in the states under the Habsburg Crown. Joseph Khell in Vienna and Andreas Jaszlinszky in Tyrnau followed Newton’s praise of de Dominis and explicitly pointed to de Dominis’s experiment with the glass ball filled with water. As professor of philosophy at the University of Vienna, Karl Scherffer followed in the footsteps of Bošković and his criticism of de Dominis’s contribution, and that is why he did not mention de Dominis in his university textbook Physica particularis, but only in the treatise De iride (1761), the text of which he later included in his textbook Institutiones opticae (1775). Leopold Biwald, professor of physics at the University of Graz, in his textbook Physica particularis (1768) reconstructed de Dominis’s original experiment under the influence of Nollet’s Leçons de physique expérimentale, remaining loyal to the same approach in all of the later editions of his textbook until 1779.
Professors and students of philosophy at the two Jesuit Colleges in Croatia may also have become acquainted with de Dominis’s explanation of the rainbow thanks to the works of Khell, Jaszlinszky and Nollet. As evidenced by the ex libris inscriptions on their title-pages, the library of the Collegium Zagrabiense had in its collection the physics textbooks by Joseph Khell and Andreas Jaszlinszky only a couple of years after their publication, while the Collegium Fluminense in Rijeka acquired an Italian translation of Nollet’s Leçons not earlier than 1770, that is, shortly before its closing.
