Abstract

The author of the paper analyses the changes in themeaning and public use of the name of Modruš from the Middle Ages to 1969. In mediaeval times the name referred primarily to a parish (both as a religious unit and administrative unit of civil government) the seat of a bishop and feudalmanor. After the 1493 Turkish invasion, which had pernicious effects, it referred mainly to a place at the foot of Kapela Mountain, with the name of Modruš remaining only in the name of the diocese of Senj and Modruš or diocese of Krbava with the seat in Senj. Owing to that, the name of Modruš remained alive in the minds of people even when the town lost all of its old glory. In the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, the name of Modruš was occasionally used as part of the name of administrative units (Modruš - Rijeka County, Big Modruš County). With the abolition of the Senj see in 1969, it completely ceased being used by the public and even by the Church which had been its most reliable and consistent propagator since the tragic 1493. The real and symbolic name of Modruš was in that way reduced to a simple mark in the topography of the hilly parts of Croatia.
