The effect of different gender on alveolar bone changes in prosthodontic patients

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sex on alveolar bone density around the teeth with clasps. The study included 50 subjects of both sexes wearing removable partial denture (RPD) with clasps and occlusal rests. Methods: We used the method of intraoral microdensitometry by Knezović-Zlatarić to assess the changes in bone density around the retention teeth. All examined teeth were shot twice using retroalveolar standard radiographs within 3 months: the first time after RPD delivery and then after a period of 3 months of denture wearing. The copper calibration step wedge consisting of 5 steps of thickness (0.1-0.5mm) was attached to the radiograph prior to exposure in order to calibrate images. On each radiograph 7 areas of interest (region of interest; ROI) around the tooth root were selected, all 4 pixels in size. For the evaluation of alveolar bone change grey levels of each ROI were measured and were converted into equivalents of the copper step wedge thickness and it differences in bone density between the two radiographs were calculated. Results: The results of the study were analysed using Student T-test for dependent patterns and one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) with the level of reliability of 5%. The results indicated that there is not any statistically relevant change in the alveolar bone density depending on the gender. Discussion: Proper construction of RPD and intermittency of masticatory forces were probably the reason why in a 3 months period there was no statistically significant decrease in bone density.
