Abstract

Modern submarine scientific researches have been performed by driling of the Earth crust (i.e. the upper part of lithosphere) and by observing the oxygen isotopes exchange at plankton foraminiferae associations in the seas surrounding Antarctica. Drilings were performed by the research ships „Glomar Challenger“ in 1973 and 1974. as well as by „Joides Resolution“ in 1987, in accordance with previously defined programme. As result, there have been identified some climatic-geomorphological factors and perceived their importance for better understanding of polar seas in southern hemisphere.
