Abstract

Sustainable development of tourism is the development that meets tourists’ needs and contributes to the prosperity of the local population while preserving natural resources for future development. The goal of sustainable development of sport fishing tourism in Karlovac area is to improve the quality of life of local communities, to preserve natural resources, and to realize the economic benefits and socio-cultural heritage. The basic requirements for fishing tourism have long been present. Karlovac is a town lying on four rivers and the surrounding area is full of numerous artificial lakes inhabited by a diverse and large number of fish species. These are the main reasons why Karlovac area is considered to be one of the most attractive destinations for fishing tourism in the Republic of Croatia. The purpose of this study was to determine the current status of sport fishing tourism in Karlovac area and the application of the principles of sustainable development in sport fishing tourism.
