Abstract

The subject of this article is the demographic development of today’s Municipality of Kalnik within the period from the first census taking in 1857 till the last census of 2001. Three main stages can be distinguished within that period (1857-2001): expansion (1857-1910), stagnation (1910-1961) and continued depopulation (1961-2001). Depopulation processes that started in 1961, effecting the whole region, have been caused by longlasting emmigration and negative population growth (‘’white plague”). Emmigration was caused by a process of deagrarization, industrialization and deruralization.
