Abstract
In this study, 571 graduate theses in the field o f dental medicine,
submitted during an eleven year period at the School o f Dentistry, University o f Zagreb, were bibliometrically analyzed. Parameters: topic and type o f the graduate thesis, number o fpages, number o f illustrations and tables in each thesis, number o f references (Croatian and international; journals and books); their interrelation and Price’s index were analyzed by descriptive statistical methods. Analysis o f variance and Tukey analysis as well as X 2 test for qualitative variables, were also employed. Certain discrepancies in the quantitative criteria were recorded among the graduate theses analyzed. Qualitatively, professional papers and reviews prevailed over scientific papers. Concerning the topics chosen, most papers were found to deal with therapy, whereas prevention as one o f the cornerstones o f current dentistry was hardly tackled in the papers. On the basis o f the results obtained in this study, the so-called mean parameters for a good graduate thesis have been designed. A graduate thesis is actually an introduction into further professional and scientific work o f new dental doctors, thus requiring due engagement and attention.
