Abstract

The condition o f oral mucosa and microbial plaque composition under golden pontics was examined in 30 patients. Samples were geathered from the oral mucosa under the pontics and from the inner surface o f the pontics when the bridges were taken off. Decubital changes o f oral mucosa under the pontics were present in all examined subjects (100%), what was attribututed to the unproper oral hygiene, because the pontics had been designed adequately. In the plaque samples Gram positive cocci were predominant, the mayority o f them being Streptococci (65,62% from the pontics, and 61,36% from the mucosa). Many Gram negative rods were also isolated, both, from the pontics (25%) and from the mucosa (18,18%). This is due to the poor and incorrect oral hygiene through a very long period. More Candida (20,45%) and Streptococcus mutans (22,75%) were isolated form the iflamed mucosa under the pontics than from the pontics (9,375% and 12,5% respectively), but this difference was not significant (p > 0,05).
It is neccessary to inform the patient how to maintain proper oral hygiene under the pontics and to explain all circumstances that poor oral hygiene could cause.
