Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the third most common malignant neoplasm worldwide, but also one of the few preventable cancers. Effective primary and secondary preventive approaches must be developed to reduce morbidity and mortality. The best prevention strategy (screening) is still under investigation (cost/benefit studies). Screening aims to lower the burden of cancer in the population by discovering latent disease in its early stages and treating it more effectively than if diagnosed later when symptoms have appeared.
