Abstract

Eosinophils substantially contribute to homeostatic maintenance of intestinal barrier function against luminal bacteria. These cells are now recognized to have key functions in the pathogenesis of several gastrointestinal disorders. Eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases are an increasingly common heterogeneous group of intestinal diseases. The purpose of this review is to summarize a growing literature defining the pathophysiological role of eosinophils in healthy intestine and in some gastrointestinal disorders, and present the latest knowledge about the care of patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases.
