Abstract
A three-year study of deciduous dentition health was carried out in
a sample of 236 children from a new suburb and from a village near Zagreb, aged 3— 7 years. The children were examined 2— 3 times at year intervals (625 examinations in total). The results were computer processed, pointing to the following: — Initial carious lesions appeared at the age of 3 and markedly increased with age; — Molars were observed to be at highest risk of developing caries, whereas canines were found to be last affected; — No differences in the incidence of caries in relation to the place of residence were observed; — The treatment of deciduous teeth was not delayed in relation to the occurrence of caries, but on an average included 34.87% of carious teeth only. — The treatment was found to be better in the new suburb than in the village near Zagreb.
— The most severe form of dental morbidity (i. e. extracted and completely destroyed teeth with retained roots) was first recorded in 9.26% of subjects aged 5 and found to slightly rise to wards the end of the study period. — A premature loss of the supporting zone teeth, with a mean incidence of 12.47%, was observed to be markedly more frequent in oldest subjects from the village near Zagreb (39.3%) as compared to those from the new suburb (15.6%).
