Abstract

A presentation is made of the data published in the Yugoslav and foreign literature on the prevalence of Carabelli’s trait. The divergence of these data, the functional importance of this trait and the dilemma whether it is a progressive or regressive phenomenon are discussed. Examinations of the sets of teeth of 910 persons (506 female and 404 male), based on the current classification of this trait, have revealed Carabelli's trait in 43.40% of the examinees. It has been found in 41% of the male and 45% of the female subjects (x2 = 15.824). The findings are presented in tables. The distribution of single traits was expressed numerically and in percentages and shown in a graph. In 7.68% of the cases pits or grooves and in 35.70% of the 910 examinees cusps have been detected.
