Abstract

The general aim of this article is to point out the fundamental problems of the protection and preservation of wooden museum objects. If we go through the collections of most of town or regional museums, especially ethnographic ones, we will realize that more than a half of the objects are entirely or partly made of wood, and that more than fifty percent of these objects have been damaged. With some collections this percentage is even higher and the condition of objects is quite alarming. The primary goals of the article are: to set forth the basics of an approach to and procedures of the protection of wood as a material with all its advantages and disadvantages; to point out the mistakes in the approach and in the procedures of preservation and conservation of wooden objects; to provide fundamentals for further education of restorers, and try to contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage. Certain set of rules must be followed.
