Abstract

The author analysesthe contemporary literary-folklore repertoire of a small rural community (the village of Gdinj on the island of Hvar) with regard to the presence of: a) genres springing from oral culture, b) popular poems, c)results of the local literary-folklore production. Continued recording of folk poems on the island of Hvar from 19th century till nowadays gives him an opportunity for a diachronic approach. The process of a gradual decline of orally transmitted decasyllabic ballads, which began as early as in the 19th century, has mostly been finished. Only few of those ballads are preserved thanks to a secondary circulation through printed poem-books.
